In a modern engine you should not hear engine knock. You will see a loss of power from what is call Knock retard which is timing retarded from MBT or minimum brake timing which is timing the engine produce max torque using the least amount of timing. There are a lot of variables in controlling knock retard from fuel quality(higher octane) and different oils and their composition. There is also weather conditions and the car state of tune which is constantly changing on a modern engine. Timing is always changing looking for MBT.

I hear it most often when my engine starts telling me knock knock jokes.

"Knock knock. Who's there. Your engine. No it isn't, you're a knock knock joke. "

On a serious note, I can hear very slight knock on regular gas on a hot day when under load.

Knock is a sound caused by premature detonation of the air/fuel mixture inside the cylinder as the piston is compressing it, and before the spark plug actually fires to set it off. Extreme cylinder temps or fuel with a lower octane rating (resistance to detonation) are just two possible causes, among many. The knock is due to the collision of two opposite forces: the crank pushing the piston towards top dead center being met by the explosion of air/fuel pushing the piston down.

Knock sensors on Hondas are notoriously inaccurate which is very annoying. Knocking comes from some form of unideal ignition. Detonation, preignition etc. can cause it. Sometimes false positives happen due to metallic noises or vibration.

this is an example of obd2 data from a civic that is tuned...

knock #1 is cylinder #1... and you can see how much knocks are recorded....

after the previous video, now you can watch this video, it simulate real time, and imagine air/fuel ignite and disrupt the timing.
