More proof has surfaced that Honda in Japan is 100 percent cooler than Honda in North America.

The Japanese automaker has always kept its home market happy with adorable little kei cars and tiny sports cars that we North Americans have always been very vocally jealous about.

Here are three new concepts that Honda has debuted at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon that we are intrigued by.

Honda Could be Committing a Sin with the New Civic Type R

The upcoming Honda Civic Type R will reportedly offer a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as an option.

The new comes to us from CivicX, citing a report in the November issue of CAR magazine, which includes an interview with senior Honda staff Mirsuru Kariya, Daisuke Tsutamori and Katsushi Inoue. Kariya is better known as the head engineer for the Civic line, while Tsutamori assumes the role of head designer. Inoue is the head of Honda in Europe, so the report seems to have credible sources.

Honda Could Team Up with Googles Waymo on Self-Driving Cars

Honda is in talks with Waymo, Googles newly formed self-driving car project, to supply the tech company with vehicles.

If it moves forward, it will be a technical collaboration between Honda engineers and Waymos self-driving technology team, allowing both teams to learn from each other and work together. Honda will have to provide Waymo with vehicles that are specially modified to accommodate the self-driving technology, while Waymo would lend Honda its insight into self-driving technology, a field every automaker is interested in these days.

The step would help Honda towards its previously stated goal of having cars with automated driving capabilities on public roads sometime around 2020. Joining forces with Waymo may also give Honda a different approach at bring self-driving technology to market by doing so with a partner rather than alone.
