Great information. Its good to hear that I may not have one of the oil consumption problem engines. I have been watching the oil level like a hawk since I read the post about oil consumption in the Si's. After I read that post i was wondering if my decesion to come back to the Si family was a good one and the truth is, it was well worth the wait.:vtec228:

Normal driving will pretty much complete the break in after about 600 miles. It should be completely ready for a good hard run after 1,000 miles or less. The oil consumption sometimes gets slightly worse between 1,000 and 3,000 miles then tapers off. Monitor your oil level closely during this time to see if it gets thirsty and needs a little oil to keep it in the safe range of the dipstick. Yours does not appear to be one of the high oil consumption problem engines and most likely will not be one.

The safe range of the dipstick is technically any place between the two holes on the stick. It is a good idea to keep it at or near the top hole to be safe. It is perfectly fine at the lower hole but it would not take much to be consumed to put you at risk for oil starvation which is never a good idea. Starvation for even a short time is very hard on the engine due to low oil pressure.

Thanks for the great input. How long is the break-in period and when will this baby stop consuming oil? I now have 1400 miles on it and have been following your instructions and the oil level has only dropped a tiny bit, just below the top dot on the stick. Does the oil level need to be at the top dot or is it acceptable to range in between the two. I know I probally sound like a total moron but I assure you that I do have some knowledge about cars. I just dont want to F* up this car because its my first brand new car and I want to keep it tip top. Thanks.

Drive it to at least 5,000 miles or at least until the maintenance minder shows 50% oil life remaining or less. Keep an eye on the level of oil since it is normal for them to consume some during initial break in. Add full synthetic if needed to keep the level near the top of the safe operating range on the dipstick. When it is time for the first oil change use full synthetic Genuine Honda 0w20 for the first one at least. Then run whatever full synthetic oil you want to use after that.

At 800 miles you should be starting to get on your car a little more aggressively and after 1,000 miles drive it hard if you want to without fear of doing any harm. Make sure you do some engine compression braking by downshifting and letting the engine slow your progress when coming to a stop or going down a hill. The only rule would be not to downshift so low you throw it into vtec range. 4500 rpms max is a good target for these downshifts. This will help seat the rings even better.

You seem like a very knowledgeable guy, I have 800 miles on my Si, when should I have the first oil change? do i wait 5K like the dealer said or should i have it changed sooner? also, should I have them put in full synthetic or just the synthetic blend? Its only a $15 difference between the two so im not worried about the cost. Just want to know what would be better for this four door beast.:eek3dancesmiley:

I may have posted a few comments a long time ago comparing the two but don't remember anything specific actually. I would be willing to answer any questions you have between them though. I have owned both since new and both are still in the driveway now.
