It will be interesting to see if anyone else gets rid of this noise by replacing the tensioner/pulley.

I am going to try this method, because I am embarrassed by this noise. It's happening every day now. Can't stand it anymore. :(

Mine made a noise tonight. I was half in and out on the clutch in traffic and not doing my normal clutching practices.

I had the same problem, I took it to the dealer several times and they did not find anything... it wasn't until I got really angry with them that they found it. They had to replace the entire clutch system.

I just sent this to Honda Canada.

"Please take the time to go to this link and read all about everyone's 2012 Civic Si. http://www.9thgencivic.com/forum/drivetrain-problems/53745-1st-gear-clutch-noise.html

If I am going to pay 30,000 dollars for a car, I would expect it not to make any EMBARRASSING noises until it's at least 120,000Km old. But this noise started at 15,000km. Almost everyday now, when I let my foot off the clutch in 1st gear, pulling from a complete stop, the clutch plate (possibly throw out bearing) squeals.

The noise sounds like when you drag a table across a wooden floor. The noise lasts for about 3/4 of a second. It is very loud inside the car, and it turns heads out on the streets. I wish for this to be fixed under complete warranty. Even if it is related to the clutch. Me and 1000s of other Si owners want this dealt with professionally. The least Honda could do in CANADA, where this beautiful automobile is BUILT, is to INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE FULLY, and provide all affected customers with a comprehensive package that will replace the defective part from 0-100,000km inclusively. Because Honda is supposed to be all about QUALITY. I have no respect for people who build GARBAGE. So, please give this message to the HIGHEST possible person in charge there. On behalf of the 1000s affected, make us proud to own a Honda, and fix your shit that we paid you for."

You're welcome.

Was this message an email or a snail mail letter?
The latter holds more sway than the former, in the eyes of a business.
Same to be said for petitioning government, too.

Your description of the noise is right on.
And, just so you know, clutch systems have been making noise for decades, for various reasons.
NO, a properly functioning clutch should not make the noise you describe, here.
The first time I ever heard the dreaded "clutch howling" noise was in a '70s vintage Honda motorcycle (a wet clutch I might add.)

In all cases, which I've been involved with, directly or indirectly; the repair was a clutch replacement.
Most howling noise can be repaired by replacing the friction disk. Though most dealers will probably replace the disk, pressure plate and throw out bearing, some may replace the flywheel, too.

The best course of action is to demonstrate the noise for a dealer Tech.
He/she should know what to do then.

We'll see...

"Thank you for contacting Honda Canada.

We are sorry to learn that you are having some clutch concerns with your
2012 Honda Civic SI bearing the VIN: ************. We would like to
further review your concern and would like to know if a diagnostic has been
performed at a Honda dealership to confirm the concern. If yes, kindly
provide the name of the dealership and the date the diagnostic was
performed. If no diagnostic has been completed, please contact your local
Honda dealership's service department to schedule one. To locate your
nearest Honda dealership, please click on the following link:

Please note, if the symptom is of an intermittent nature, it becomes
difficult for the Honda dealership to diagnose and pin point the cause of
the concern. Rest assured, your comments have been documented.

As you are no doubt aware, Honda takes great pride in the design of our
vehicles and strive to manufacture and design parts that will perform to
our rigid standards. Most of them do in fact perform satisfactorily and
in many cases, outperform our customers' expectations. On the other hand,
despite very careful inspection procedures, there occasionally will be some
components that do not perform as long as we would have liked, hence, the
reason why we offer one of the best comprehensive warranties in the
industry.

Your vehicle has a great majority of its warranty remaining and we are
confident that it will offer you the necessary coverage and protection
against manufacturing defects.

Once again Mr. B., we thank you for contacting Honda Canada.

Sincerely,

HONDA CANADA INC.

So I called that TRS number and they said it's a dealers only phone-line and that I have to take my car to the dealership ughh. If anyone fixed this, it's definitely the tensioner pully? Why does it make the noise only when engaging 1st? :/

Mine made the noise again a couple times tonight :(

You can feel it in the pedal. I doubt it's a pulley. Hmmm

I took my car in about 2.5 weeks ago, got the car back, and Honda said there was a "plate rubbing." This was a temporary fix because the noise was back within 2 hrs of driving. I'm taking my car in here in a few days to get fixed, and I'll post again with their results and "resolution"

Honda came back and told me they "couldn't reproduce the noise" and without hearing the noise, they can't do any warranty work.
