In a statement yesterday, Honda said its production will return to 100 percent in August with the lone exception of the 2012 Civic. The Civic's production is projected to remain at 50 percent until some time later in the fall.

Since April, Honda has been assembling new cars at below normal levels due to component shortages following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Toyota and Nissan have also had their productivity curtailed, but things are looking up in some areas.

"The light at the end of the tunnel is glowing brighter for us, represented by this significant improvement in our production situation," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., in the statement.

Producing more vehicles in North America than Toyota or Nissan, Honda is expected to be the slowest returning to full levels.

This month's Honda sales already are feeling the effects. TrueCar.com, a consumer research and vehicle pricing Web site, predicts Honda's May sales will decline 26%, the most of any major manufacturer.
