Honda announced today that it will recall 50,000 2012 Civics because the driver’s side driveshaft might have been improperly assembled possibly allowing it to separate from a joint while the car is running.

Should the issue arise, the engine wouldn’t be able to move the car in any gear. Affected cars might also roll away while parked if the parking brake isn’t engaged.

So far, there haven’t been any crashes reported, but the company is calling for the vehicles to come back for inspection. Despite being one of the most popular cars in America, the 2012 model year was generally criticized by automotive journalists and got an unfavorable review by Consumer Reports. The interior was a sticking point for many reviewers, though we didn’t agree with, at least not wholeheartedly.

If you own one of the affected vehicles, expect to be contacted by Honda and told to bring your car in for service free of charge.

I called and my Civic was not affected. Roughly less than 10 percent of total cars sold.

You can always call Honda Customer Relations to verify. I did this just to make sure because the Honda website did not indicate that my car was affected.

I had to make a payment, so I looked. I'm not on the list. Wonder if it's model-specific.

Very interesting indeed...

Here is what my owners link said:

Concerned about safety? So is Honda. That's why Owner Link provides up-to-date recall information about your vehicle. Because Owner Link recall listings are based on your Honda's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), they are specific to your vehicle.

There are no current safety recalls for your 2012 Honda Civic Si.

Went to myhonda.ca and couldn't find any recalls in my profile. Better call them just to make sure.

Roughly 299,000 2012 Civics have been sold in the US. Canadian figures would just increase the total number to roughly 355000.

Uh, it would be really nice if they'd release the VIN range for these "50,000" cars. I don't trust Owner's Link - my 2006 Si had several recalls that never once showed on the portal.

And given my Si rolled backwards on a slight hill while idling and the parking brake up...I'm a bit concerned about this. The parking brake was FULLY set, the car brand new, and had I not looked back, my second of two 2012 Si' would've smashed into parked cars.

Not terribly happy.

If the parking brake was set on a slight hill how did the car move? I don't know how to drive a stick btw. although I'm thinking about buying a new 2012 civic ex manual
