Figured I'd ask the experts.
I know the immobilizer will require the computer to be reprogrammed so the car will start but can a 2012 EXL remote be programmed using the key on/off method like 2006 and earlier for opening the doors and trunk?

Thanks

Short answer NO.
Immobilizer Key Registration
Procedure

1.HDS DLC - Connection

1.Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.

2.Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

3.Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.

2.Immobilizer Key Registration

NOTE:
The HDS is required for registration of the immobilizer keys.
Programming the immobilizer also programs the keyless transmitter.
Check for aftermarket electrical equipment that can cause problems with transponder operation.
The immobilizer-keyless control unit can store up to six immobilizer keys.

Add One New Key/Keyless Transmitter
1.Have a registered key, a new immobilizer key, and the first password from the iN system.

2.Select IMMOBI from the SYSTEM SELECTION MENU, then select IMMOBILIZER SETUP.

3.Select Add and Delete Keys, then Add 1 key.

4.Do the registration according to the instructions on the HDS screen.

5.Check if the engine can be started with the newly registered key.

6.When prompted by the HDS, do the keyless transmitter programming.

7.Make sure the keyless transmitter's operation works properly.

Add and Delete Key/Keyless Transmitter, Then Select Delete or Add Keys
1.Have a registered key, a new immobilizer key, and the first password from the iN system.

2.Select IMMOBI from the SYSTEM SELECTION MENU, then select IMMOBILIZER SETUP.

3.Select Add and Delete Keys, or Delete or Add Multiple Keys.

4.Do the registration according to the instructions on the HDS screen.

5.Check if the engine can be started with the newly registered key.

6.When prompted by the HDS, do the keyless transmitter programming.

7.Make sure the keyless transmitter's operation works properly.

All Keys are Lost
1.Prepare all new keys and have the immobilizer PCM code.

2.Select IMMOBI from the SYSTEM SELECTION MENU, then select IMMOBILIZER SETUP.

3.Select Add and Delete Keys, then ALL KEYS LOST.

4.Do the registration according to the instructions on the HDS screen.

5.Check if the engine can be started with the newly registered keys.

Thanks for the info.

The locksmith that my wife went to Friday told her the two extra keys that I had gotten off the internet were wrong and couldn't be programmed. Said the remote part should have worked with the key on/off method if they were the right ones so they had to order a new one.

Cutting one key I already had - $25+tax
Trying unsuccessfully to program the keys - $35+tax
Ordering another key that would work - $110+tax

A few of the thing he told my wife didn't sound right so I went to the Honda dealer in Cookeville TN this morning and they got all three keys working. $110+tax for programming.

Your signature is so fitting right now. Most of the info I found said self programming might work but I never could get the car to go into programming mode. Wasn't sure if I was doing it right.
