Before spending money on a starter, try a new starter relay, if it’s damaged in some way or has any extra resistance inside, it could cause an intermittent click if it’s not allowing full current to flow from the battery to the solenoid.

From there, if your problem is not solved I’d suspect the contact plate in the starter solenoid , that completes the circuit to the starter motor may be corroded or loose, hence the repeated clicking but no cranking

I'll look at the relay. I tried getting the starter off and its an absolute pain to get those bolts out

Great job. But why would that cause the click sound?
Agreed, I didn't even think of the clutch switch because theres generally no sound when the ignition switch is disabled.
Glad it is fixed though. A good reminder to start small and work up.

Glad you got it fixed.probably clicked because there was some current going through the circuit just not enough to crank the motor at times
