CVT fluid and filter change

1107 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jasper60103
I'm all geared up to change my tranny fluid and filter and this guy at work says to me he hears its a transmission killer that I should use the same fluid after I run it through cheesecloth. Something about conditioned rubber seals or something. Has anyone here done a CVT fluid/filter change on a 2014 Civic EX or similar model? And how did it turn out? Or are there any experienced gear heads out there who could give me a definitive answer? I'm over 100k miles and my CVT fluid fill plug keeps popping off too. Any fix for that ?

I would definitely change the transmission fluid out. I think its pretty much general consensus on here that the CVT fluid should be changed out every 30-35k miles. I just had a second CVT fluid change done on my '15 EX last month. With regards to the fill plug popping out thats also been discussed on here a lot. It's a common problem that a lot of people here have had to deal with. I think there are quite a few creative solutions that some of the other members on here have come up with.

No, no, no. CVTF has friction modification compounds that work towards wear reduction on the belt-to-friction surface interfaces. They get consumed by thermal decomposition. The only way to replace it is to drain and then refill with new CVTF.

The additives package also contains detergents (I group dispersants with this class of compounds) that are consumed over time, as well. Cheesecloth might catch a very small, small, small, small, small and insignificant percentage of dispersed wear materials, so it's a worthless endeavor. Refilling with drained & strained used-up CVTF is a waste of time.

Something about conditioned rubber seals or something.
No idea what that guy is talking about. Fresh CVTF will contain compounds that intercalate into elastomers (seal compounds) to help them maintain shape & elasticity (i.e., ensure they continue doing their job). Running CVTF through cheesecloth has zero helpful effect in that regard.

Although AmSOil makes great ATF (I've used it for years), stick with Honda HCF-2 CVTF. It's a demonstrated solid performer.

I changed the CVTF on a 2014 LX that had about 100,000 miles on it with no record of servicing. That Civic ran better afterwards. Was set to do it again, but that Civic was recently totaled by some doofus in a Chevy 1-ton dually pulling a double axle farm chemicals trailer.

So, just purchased a 2015 EX sedan. No record of CVTF service, just over 100,000 miles. Hell yeah I'm gonna change it. I'm planning on doing three changes over the next year, and will most likely change the filter & O-rings under the CVTF heat exchanger (cooler?) on the last one.

Remove it and clean the passages with brake cleaner or carb cleaner, let it dry, reinstall. That helped us.

EDIT: I meant, remove the vent cap, clean the passages on that, then re-install the vent cap and the fill plug.

I’ve done about three CVT fluid changes between my daughter’s 2015 civic lx and mine.
These CVTs love their fluid (HCF-2), and noticeable smoothness after fresh fluid.
I added a zip tie to secure the fill plug.
Good luck.

Search Mr. Ranger on here. He made a YouTube video.
What your friend is referring to about use the old fluid. That's on regular automatic Trans. With high milage and never changed.
With the plug just keep a tie on it so you don't lose it.
Just checking in.

Just over 75,000 miles on my 2015 Civic Lx. I’m driving a lot less now since I started working hybrid when Covid hit.
Anyway, I just completed my third DIY CVT drain and fill.
Still running smooth, no issues.
Also be sure to inspect your vent tube on a regular basis. Mine was clogged up this time. And fill plug is secured with a zip tie just in case.
