It's time for the annual DFW Map Rally, to be held on Saturday, May 21. The start will be in McKinney, Texas.

For this event, we give you a certain map and some rules, and you figure out how to get to the checkpoints and the finish. Then you drive the route you have determined. Along the way, you answer a few questions, which will tell us what route you took.

The start is at Brandon Tomes Subaru, 900 S. Central Expy, McKinney, 75070. For more details, please see the flier at http://texasscca.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=7yXF4aNWEwk=&tabid=76 .

Our first Civic just entered! Sorry, I don't know what Generation it is. But all you need is two more, and you can form a Team to compete with last year's winner, Mini.

[TX] ALL RIGHT Rally - July 9

20 cars started the DFW Map Rally, held on May 21, and 20 finished. They all reported having a good time. Cars entered included Honda, Kia, BMW, Mini, S2000, Mustang, SAAB, Subaru, Lexus, Jaguar, Mazda, Volvo....

Our next road rally will be held on July 9th. It will take its theme from UPS, who has discovered that delivery routes defined with no left turns are safer and quicker than other routes. Always wanting to be on the forefront of auto safety, we have defined a scenic rally route from Plano to Princeton with no instructed left turns. We have also devised some tests that you can try along the route to keep from getting bored.

The ALL RIGHT Rally starts on July 9th at Subaru of Plano, 4480 West Plano Pkwy, Plano, Texas 75093. For more details, please see the flier at TX Region SCCA - Rally News .

This is event #2 in the 2011 SCCA Road Rally Championship Series. There's still time to make points!

[DFW] Clear Blue Sky Rally

The second annual Clear Blue Sky Rally will be held on Saturday, September 24th, starting in Dallas. We had six entries in Civics in the last year: you are invited!

Last year's Clear Blue Sky had the most entrants of any or our rallies in many years. Was it the drive in the country, or the B-17 promised at the ending point at the Vintage Flying Museum in Ft. Worth? Probably both, so this year we offer free entry into the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas. Instead of a B-17, we offer an F-105 fighter as a photo backdrop for your car.

The drive begins at the museum, and ends at a popular Denton eating spot. In between will be 3 or 4 hours of driving, mostly on pretty horse-country roads in rural North Texas. The rallymaster has conjured up some fun tests, and those who score the best will take home a trophy.

This is event #3 in the 2011 SCCA Road Rally Championship Series. The Great Pumpkin Rally in October will be number 4, and a charity event for a worthwhile cause will be featured in December to end the year. More info can be found at Texas Region of the Sports Car Club of America, Inc. > Home, click on Rally.

Clear Blue Sky Rally update

There are 18 cars preregistered for the Clear Blue Sky Rally....that means we should have nearly 40 on rally day: this Saturday!

Mustangs, Audis, Subarus, Minis, plus a Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Lexus, Lotus, BMW, Honda, and an Austin-Healey 3000 (BRG, of course).

The Honda entered is from Plano, but it's not a 9G Civic. So it's up to you....

You can join us at tinyurl.com/CBS11msr . Then meet us at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas Saturday at 9am. Don't forget to take a pic of your car in front of the F-105 fighter.

Updates

DFW Map Rally – June 2, 2012

The DFW Map Rally starts in Decatur, Texas. To preregister, go to MotorsportReg.com : SCCA - Texas Region - RoadRally announces DFW Map Rally (Sat 2, Jun 2012) info at Eagles Canyon Raceway, Slidell, TX 76267 (1102). Registration opens at 9:00am at the Shell service station at the intersection of US 380 and Business 380 on the northeast side of Decatur. After registration, you will run a 12-mile (approximate) odometer check, then proceed to Eagles Canyon Raceway, where you will receive the materials needed to run the rally.

In this rally, we give you 10 locations to visit, which you can find on the maps we provide. All you have to do is figure out a route to visit each location in the shortest distance. Then go drive it. No signs to find along the way. You do have to answer a question or questions at each location, which may come from a sign, but that's all there is to it. You may even use your computers or GPS units, if you enter in class E, which allows electronic aids. In class S, all you may use is the maps we give you. Novices and Masters alike run in either class E or S.

There is an award for the first-time rally team that has the highest score among first-timers, not otherwise placing.

After the odo check, you will then be directed to Eagles Canyon Raceway, where SCCA does its road racing. There is a place indoors with tables for you to work with your maps to determine your route. When you are ready, get in your car and check in at the start line. After your odo reading is recorded, you are off to Paradise, and nine other other places.

There is a time limit, of course, but we believe it's ample. Your mileage, corrected by your odo factor, determines your score. If you miss one of the scoring opportunities at the ten locations, you will be penalized.

It is still a fun drive in the country, but you choose your roads. With the exception of two short areas we tell you about, you will probably run entirely on paved roads. You are free to drive on unpaved roads, as long as they are not private, but we don't think you will need to.

How can GPS, Google Maps, and so forth help you? We don't know, but if you can think of a way, enter in class E. The overall winner, by the way, will be asked to tell us all how they did it, as part of the awards ceremony. So be prepared.

Clear Blue Sky Rally - DFW

The Clear Blue Sky Rally is back, the second event in the 2012 Texas Region Rally Championship Series. Starting and ending in McKinney, we will explore the most scenic, twisty back country roads (all paved) of Collin County. Along the way we’ll visit the towns of Melissa, established in 1851, Anna, in 1867 and the “oldest town in Collin County”, Weston, settled in the 1840’s. There will be a few course following problems to keep you on your toes and some fun clues for the questions you will answer along the way.

The rally will take place on Saturday, July 14, starting and ending at Spring Creek Barbeque, 1993 North Central Expressway (NW corner with Highway 380) McKinney, TX 75070. Registration/Check-In will be from 8:45 to 9:30 am. The Safety Briefing will be at 9:35 am, and an important Rally School will be held from 9:40 to 10:15 am.

Starting Time, First Car: 10:30 am; Finish Time, First Car: 2:30 pm, estimated

Route: It’s a secret, of course, but expect to drive on scenic back roads

Rally Fee: $30.00 -- SCCA Members: $20.00 -- $5 late fee if not preregistered

Preregistration is at tinyurl.com/CBS12msr .

It’s back to the course-following rallies of a couple of years ago. Some of you claimed to be getting bored with the super-easy courses of last year. But don’t worry about getting lost. If you make the mistakes we expect, you will drive right back on course without ever knowing you were off-course. This is a common challenge among SCCA rallies, and lots of people think it’s loads of fun.

Thirteen cars are entered in the Clear Blue Sky Rally. I would guess about 20 on rally day. Cars entered include Mazdas, Subarus, Acura, Mustang, Mini, BMW, and more. No Civics yet.

The really good news is that gas prices are down to about $3.10 for regular. And it should be about 75 degrees at registration time, and the upper 90's when you finish, with a small chance of showers. Not too bad for July.

The final pre-check went well, with a novice team making it through all the tests. The rally passed the required Safety Check with flying colors.
