Hey everyone, I've had this 2012 si for around a year now. Last night on startup, there was a grinding noise which goes away almost immediately, I believe I need to replace my clutch soon but I've never heard of a bad clutch making a grinding noise on startup. Any help is greatly appreciated

Here is a video with the sound, let me know if the link doesn't work.

Anybody mention the starter may be going bad..?
😭
It is on the front of the engine, you need to disconnect intake / unbolt intake manifold bracket & throttle body bracket / remove intake manifold to access it - I just did mine recently and was recommended to also replace the manifold gaskets upon reassembly… I followed and works perfectly!

Yea I was actually going to mention that to begin with as well, mine does it every once in a while if it’s super cold but based on that sound clip it was def your starter.. I don’t think the VTC is to hard to access/replace so at least there’s that - not anymore difficult than the starter replacement that’s for sure

Was it the starter? My 13 Si had a grinding noise on startup that ended up being a bad throwout/ clutch release bearing. Started as a noise at start up, progressed over time to also a noise at take off. Super intermittent, and getting it to yell in front of a mechanic was an absolute nightmare. Thankfully, my father is a Honda Mastertech of many decades, and happened to be with me as it did it one day. If you are doing clutch any way, 100% do not reuse the bearing.

To make the clutch squeal or growl nearly on command.
Find a truck ramp put the front wheels on the ramp so the front of the car is no longer level.
Then start from a stop in 1st gear. If the clutch has the typical growling noise; it should be heard.
