Hi All,

Currently unable to shift into 3rd or 4th gear. 3rd and 4th feel like hitting a wall that stops the shift. Took the 2013 Civic Si to a trans shop and they think the issue is related to the Synchros which I've read could be the problem. To take apart and rebuild, the labor alone costs $1140 + Parts. A few questions:

Is it cheaper to rebuild or buy a used tranny with some mileage?
If rebuild is the best option does anyone have suggestions for replacement parts?
If buy used is the best option does anyone have suggestions where to best find these?

I use the Civic for Autocross and have been for about 4 years now. Any help is appreciated.

depends what you want to do with the car...

if you want to supercharge or put a turbo, a rebuild will give you the opportunity to change the gearing.
no labour guarantees with a junkyard replacement (only part), but if you can find a decent specimen, it (might) be half the price to do the job.

Personally I would adjust the clutch pedal and make sure there are no issues with your cables and linkage, before committing to a tranny change.

Thanks for the headsup. I actually already have a new short shifter, bushings and clutch cylinder installed. The only thing I didn't replace was the shifter cables which I checked myself and had the shop check and concluded they looked good. I'll see if any trannys are available then but most likely will use the rebuild to upgrade internals of the tranny. Any suggestions on what I should upgrade?

I’d you autox, you can’t really blow 3rd and 4th gear synchros since you’re always in 2nd. I’d start with taking the short shifter off first. Shifter cables may be stretched

Definitely understand that Autox didn't cause the gear issue. Just providing facts to show cars usage as a daily and autox vehicle. Before taking the civic to the local trans shop I checked the shifter and cables myself and didn't see any issues. Again most likely issue is with the Synchro's which I'll findout next week. With that being said does anyone have any experience with Synchrotech and prefer their Synchros over OEM?

My Goal is to have a daily driver that I still Autox every year. Looking to actually get the Exedy OEM Clutch. The trans shop is going to resurface the flywheel. My current issue though is that I need to replace 4th gear and apparently this is on backorder with any OEM Honda Manufacturer. Does anyone have any insight on how I can find a 4th gear mainshaft I'm getting super worried on being able to find one w/o purchasing a used tranny?

Contact dale @ geardriveninc or tall pines. They might have some oem gears in stock and/or upgraded gears.
