Car in question is a 2012 Civic LX coupe, about 182,000 miles on it. Was heading to work and the change lever decided it was done, center shaft broke. Somehow managed to get it to work then get it towed home. Upon removal the broken center shift was discovered.

Tried to order a replacement part (24400-56L-305) from Majestic Honda, only to find that they do not have it in stock. And it seems like it is a pretty rare part, as they said none of the parts dealerships in the country have it. A separate place said their source warehouse in California has it, but it would take time to get it from them, then it would get sent out to me. Second option is to find a whole transmission, but a 5-speed seems just as elusive.

My main concern is it looks like there was a bolt that held part of the mechanism to the input shaft, and when I removed the change lever parts this bolt was nowhere to be found. I've tried poking around with a magnet to try and fish it out, but no luck.

Does anyone have a pic of the bolt in question? And perhaps a way to get it out without having to remove the transmission? Thank you!

that's a weird one...

shift/lever arm.

try a local junk yard that has a cracked or damaged transmission housing from a collision, that's not suitable for resale and can be parted out.
or try online and see if you can convince the seller to part out a damaged unit.
There are a pile of X grade for parts units here:

a skilled welder may be able to fix that.

I wonder if someone didn't smash into your bumper while parked and in gear to cause that damage.

this is not normal from usual wear and tear.
that is unless you're a gorilla when power shifting that LX

I will readily admit that I am not the nicest person to this car. :p

I was able to get the new part from a dealership, got it installed easily and got everything back together. Started the car, put it in reverse and backed down the driveway a little, then first gear and pulled back up, no issues. Did this several times with no issues.

Reversed the car out of the driveway, went to go for first gear... and it wouldn't shift out of reverse. Fiddles with it for a minute and managed to get it back into first gear and back into the driveway.

Upon disassembling everything again, I can see that the reverse shift fork inside the transmission is not returning to a neutral position, so it's happening independent of the cables.

Anyone have a clue what could be the cause here? If I can avoid having to drop the transmission that would be fantastic, but I feel it may be coming

I might soon resort to the Russian method of auto repair and start hitting it with a hammer.
They must have a lot of Harley-Davidsons over there.

Got it!
I must have misplaced the tiny little washer that goes between the pickup assembly and the transmission case, which must have caused it to be in the path of whatever gear is right there. My own dumb mistake.

A little poking around with a bore camera and I spotted it down in the bottom. Some more magnet fishing and some creativity with a curved metal bar and I was able to push/pull is out the pickup hole.

Now the joy of putting everything back together...
