I’ve been looking into getting a KTuner to put into my 9th gen Si. I daily the car and have no plans to boost or really any mods besides exhaust and coils.

I was reading that base maps bring a fairly significant performance boost out of the box and I like the feature to disable rev hang.

I was looking into KTuner specifically over Hondata because I like the screen with the shift indicators. It is also cheaper than the Hondata, which I don’t feel like I need since I’m not going boosted.

Is it worth it to get a tuner with no plans to get any further mods?

To be honest base maps are garbage they are only meant to get you by till you can get a proper tune from someone who knows what they are doing. To get the most out of Ktuner or Hondata and your vehicle you'll need to get it tuned remotely or dyno tuned locally from a professional. Just buying Ktuner and slapping on a base map your not getting the most out of the product or your vehicle so I wouldn't bother. To do it right you'll need to factor in the cost of Ktuner plus the cost of a tune and decide if the cost is warranted.

to be completely honest, I’ve heard arguments on both sides. Some people say that the base maps are no good, but others say that the base maps are better than stock regardless.

what about the base maps make them not worth the purchase? Obviously a proper tune would be miles better than a base map tune, but I’m coming from the perspective that my car won’t be heavily modified. Maybe I could get a professional tune later on down the line, but I’m trying to figure out if it is worth it in the mean time.

The stock Honda tune from the factory is horrible.

A full custom tune on a stock car will give you around 10 whp peak but some much more usable power in the mid range as well as torque.
Also will get better mpg as well.

Using a base map your not utilizing the full potential of Ktuner. If a custom tune on a stock car yields10whp and a slightly better power band what is a base map going to give you for your money?

I have Hondata with a stock 9th gen. All I have is an intake. I find hondata to be better just cause I find you have more freedom, Yeah the shift lights are cool with ktuner but your 9th gen should already have that unless you don't have an SI. Hondata also has an app for your phone that does the same thing. I have been using a base map for about 2 months and it definitely feels more powerful. I'm able to beat tuned ram 1500 with the hemi. I 100% recommend Hondata but it is all personal preference.

But yes custom tunes will be 10x better.

I wouldn't go with a basemap. They are generic maps that aren't tuned for your specific car. Every car, even if it's the same model, is different. I would go with a custom tune.

I just wanted to put my 2 cents. If you have a stock-ish car and you did a reflash with the basemap, it's not bad. I did it with Hondata and I think it's better than stock. The power delivery is much smoother. Disabling rev hang made it shift smoother especially when having passengers.

Per Hondata's website, the power gain you may get is very dependent on elevation. You will gain the "10" hp at sea level but not 5000' above sea level. It's neglible on their basemap.

For stock-ish cars, you probably don't need a custom tune. I think it's fine without it. If you have more mods, then yeah go for the custom tunes. It can only improve wot and street driveability.

Those are valid questions. I will data log after a couple weeks of driving and post results.

The base map on the reflash is maf based. Afr targets are at stoic.

If there are knocks, I can always reach out to hondata and send them the data logs since it is their basemap and I haven’t seen any instance of anyone blowing up their engine on a reflash for a stock car.
