I just got my civic, and would like to upgrade my sound system. My budget is about 800 dollars, but I would like to keep in under 500 if possible. Is it possible to add new speakers, sub, and amp without adding a new head unit? If possible I would prefer to keep my exisiting stock head unit.

so, let me get this right...you want to upgrade ALL of your 6 internal speakers (not including the factory sub), plus an amp and sub to plop in the trunk? If you're looking for decent quality to upgrade all of that, then I don't think that's a large enough budget.

Honestly, I'd go with just the amp/sub in the trunk at first and get some good quality components and then save up a bit more and get a good quality upgrade of your internals. You can easily do it all without upgrading your head unit, it's just that an aftermarket HU will give you more options/quality, but that can be resolved with a more in-depth aftermarket solution if you truly want to go that route.

Start off with the amp/sub combo in the trunk, of which there's a couple articles on these forums already. Then when you have a bit more piece together a proper solution for the internals. Good luck :)

I actually just got a sub with a built in amp, so I am no longer in need of a sub. Basicly I am just looking to upgrade my factory speakers, and I am assuming I need another amp as well. Do you think this is possible with a 500 dollar budget?

man this is going to sound crazy, but find a stereo shop in the hood and they usually do deals like that here in houston, for 600 you can get amp subs h-u, 4 speakers at one shop i go to. just search around or by from crutchfield and do it your self

what about adding my aftermarket sub, ex-l premium speakers and tweeters? How good is the ex-l speakers? And how easy would that install be. I have a friend who just upgraded his system, and he said he would sell me his ex-l premium speakers, tweeters, and sub for 80 bucks? Is that even worth it?

That's cheap but all that's really doing is replacing a stock setup with a slightly better stock setup, Lol. You want to go aftermarket if you're looking to truly upgrade.

Don't do that. I just got rid of my 'premium' speakers. You can do it for $500 but a good set of components might push it. Have you thought about coaxial speakers vs components. I'll give you a cutting edge recommendation. Get the Mirus speakers from Hybrid-Audio. Not yet fully mainstream but dominating the SQ championships all over the place. Here's where you can get them Hybrid Audio Mirus Speaker Systems and info on Hybrid-Audio can be found at The Home of the World's Finest Loudspeakers, and World Championship Car Audio Speaker Systems. - Home If you can spring for the imagine components I can promise you that you can not do better for the price.

Almost forgot, the speakers in the premium package are rated at about 10 watts RMS. You risk blowing them out with any aftermarket amp. They are blah.

what if I just get some of these Kicker DS60 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com for now? They have pretty good reviews, and are pretty cheap. If I bought them what would I need to hook it up to my stock headunit? Do I even need an aftermarket amp for them?

Also how do I go about hooking up my sub, and amp to my stock headunit? I have heard you can simply tap the rear speakers, but im still unsure how.

Listen to the same music in EX or Si models, Navi and non-Navi. You'll hear a marked difference. EFB has the solution for your sound challenged LX.

IIRC in 2013, there were four sound systems in the Civic.
LX standard 140 watt
EX standard 160 watt
Si & coupe 360 watt premium
Navigation 160 watt
To my ears they all sounded different and in the EX, the Navi system sounded much better than the standard system. I never compared the premium system to any other one. All of the units were made by different companies, so it stands to reason they all sounded differently.

You think the 9th gen LX sound is bad? It's like Carnegie Hall compared to the 8th gen LX sound system.

I'd go with some hi quality polk audio components(past experience best bang for the buck if your not an audiophile) and I currently have a JL audio 10 sub with a ported box in the trunk with a JL audio 250W amp in my non nav SI and its the ****
