I don't want to star a new thread, but this came up on my search. I want to make it clear that I am NOT trying to run my tank to empty. I am still on my first tank of gas after buying my car. I am two "bars" from empty/32 miles left on my range gauge. I am trying to find out when my "hey, put gas in me!" Light will come on. Does anyone have any insight?

So after driving to work, my light came on at 30 miles to empty. I wrote the first half at home, and now I find myself too stubborn to delete all of my work. Hahaha

I had a chance to test my Si fuel gauge limits today. First off, I want to thank those who took the chance of running out of gas and posting their results on this thread- it gave me hope that I would make it to the pump, LOL.

On my way to town, the gauge went to zero bars at 272 miles on the trip clock (partial tank). So I drove on, no worries, and realized I had forgotten my paycheck at home as I rolled into town...Crap.

Okay, so about 15 miles driven on zero bars, but gotta turn around, make it home, then back to town again...my drive home is 45-55mph highway, with a gradual climb the whole way.

Long story short I did about 33 miles on zero bars, 60/40 highway/city. The pump clicked off at 11.74xx gallons, call it 11.75, which means I still had about 1.25 gallons in the tank.

It was also cold today, about 20*F, whatever that means to folks who know how EFI engines operate. I assume a bit more fuel is used when very cold, as opposed to "normal" temperatures.

Also noteworthy- I went for a fun drive up the canyon with a full tank, a while back, and learned that the digital gauge will reflect hill climbs as well as decent- lost a couple bars climbing, but they came back on the way down...just like the old Civics.

The fuel monitoring system in the 2014 civic EX coupe from my experience is too conservative from my experience. I guess that's good though since it keeps you from going empty. Once I was down to 4 bars & it told me I had 86km left to go. My average fuel consumption was 9.6 l/100km. I went and filled up the gas tank and it took just slightly above 36 litres to fill. The specs say the gas tank can hold 50 litres so that means I still had 14 litres left. 14/50 * 100% = 28%, that means I still had just above a quarter of total fuel capacity left.

Another time I had 2 bars left & 42km, the warning came on to fill up the tank. So I did & it came to about 40 litres, meaning I still had about 10 litres of fuel in the car prior.

Judging from what ppl have reported in this forum it's pretty clear Honda has made it so that it warns you way before running out of fuel. At least now I don't have to worry about suddenly running out of fuel when I get down to a few bars or the fuel warning comes on :)

I'll get yelled at for this, but you're correct, MichaelB. I hadn't been to my parents' house in a while and knew I needed to put gas in the tank, but got dangerously low when pulling into their driveway ... roughly 10 miles until empty, I think. I misjudged the distance to the closest gas station and ended up getting there just as my fuel gauge ticked from 1 mile left in the tank to 0. I thought I was a goner, but I made it!

This might have been mentioned already in this thread but I'm lazy and don't feel like reading the hundreds of earlier posts. Even though the estimated range says zero, you probably have some more reserve fuel that can get you a few more miles/kilometers before you're really empty.

I have driven my car down to zero bars a few times, and have not stalled out yet. If I have 2 bars I can make a round trip to work and home (40 miles) before filling up.

I usually fill up at 1 or 2 bars, regardless.

Once I ran it to 0Km and when I filled up it only took about 44.25L. So even when the dash said I should be stalling and running out of gas, it was almost 6L left in the tank. I know the fuel pump is being cooled by the fuel that is in the tank but it does seem like they are err on the side of caution. I'm not too worried when the gas light comes on.

The manual says approx. 2 gallons left when light comes on. Filling up soon after lite comes on takes less than 10 gallons. Driving 20 miles further, on next tank, it took only about 10.3 gallons. Either way, if there's 'bars' left on the gauge, you should be okay unless you're doing 60 in 3rd gear. Honda built in insurance that Civics won't be seen on the side of the road dead.

Works for me.

Filled up to full from this and it was less than 11 gallons. with a 13.2 gallon fuel tank that's about 2 gallons (~60 miles) I understand it's trying to be cautious so you don't run out of fuel but 60 miles too soon is just deceitful.

just did my 40 mile commute with just three bars left.went about ten miles after the imid said zero miles. trip computer is at 383 miles for this tank. i almost wanna see how much farther it will go before it runs out. btw this is on my 2012 si

You will never be able to use all the gas in the tank. A certain quantity of fuel is required to cool the fuel pump. I would be curious how low you can go before losing pressure. I don't understand why they allow manufacturers to spec the total gallons and not the usable gallons.
You lose required pressure when there is only 1.5 to litres left in fuel in colder weather but warmer weather you have about .5 to 1 litre left due to the pressure being from Vapor not liquid pressure in the colder weather the Vapor cools and turns to liquid faster
