Tighten gas cap and check emissions light?

I have a brand new 2012 Honda Civic and the other day the tighten gas cap came on! I checked and tightened the gas cap several times but the light stayed on. After having the car off for several hours and starting it again the light did not come back on. The following day I drove it to work just fine. Starting the car at lunch time the check emissions light is on and was still on the whole day! The closest dealership to me is over an hour away! Has anyone else had the same issue and is it a serious problem?

Only time I've seen this happen is when people put the throttle body spacer in their "non-Si" Civic. If thats not the case try pulling the negative from the battery for a couple min, also make sure all the hoses around the air box are tight.

Tighten it to hear it click at least three times each time you open the tank. Are you hearing the click when you tighten your cap?

It has happened to me.

I am not sure if you have done any mods to your car but if not, main causes are
- You really forgot to tighten fuel Cap (Tighten it, message should go away in couple of days or after few restarts)
- Over fueling, when you are re-fueling, please make sure you do not try to pump in any extra fuel just for mental satisfaction or to round off some figure.

My problem was over fueling, I read about it on this forum and I never over fueled, but one day just to round off the fuel amount I pumped up more gas and after about 300 kms. Tighten up fuel cap message appeared on screen, I re checked and re tightened the fuel cap and message disappeared after a few restarts. But then I got Check Emission system message. I went to dealer, he resetted the message and I was good to go... He said computer detected large amount of fuel fumes in the tank or somewhere, and it must have happened because I left my fuel cap open (as it was the previous message)... I knew, its not the cause as i fueled it up before 300 kms but he was not convinced, anyways I knew the reason and problem solved :D

I never "top off". I'm too bashful anyway :)

Sorry to bring this back from death (I don't want to start a new one) but is there any solutions?

I have mine come on on 2 occasions. Both times were after very humid, like after rain, and there was a slight tempearture change to cooler. I ignored it and drove it for a while. After a warm up and restart the message is gone.

Thinking of going to dealer but the message would be gone after a restart. What to do?

Ive had it happen 2-3 times on mine. I never overfill, always tighten the cap to 4-5 clicks, and my car is bone stock. I've read elsewhere it may be a torn gas cap gasket but mine is fine. I had this happen on my first tank of gas on my Fit 3 years ago and it never happened again. But on my Si, it's now happened at least 3 times in the 6 months since I bought the car.

I had this issue when I installed my p2r spacer. I trimmed the white gasket and am now check gas cap free for 4 days now. :)

It's located on top of the charcoal canister, above that plastic left floor undercover you have to unbolt. Theres like 10-15 clips/bolts holding the under cover plastic piece to the bottom of the car. Whats the diagnostic trouble code the computer has stored?

Hopefully this isnt too silly, but when the CEL came on, howd you immediately know it was the sensor?

Gas cap tighten

OK. When I got off work today my tighten gas cap popped up???? Well considering I filled up 125 miles ago I was shocked to see this. So I as everyone else proceeded to tighten the lid. But fooey no good!! Then I killed it for 10 min and tried again......no luck now I have a stupid yellowish orange indicator showing me how to tighten my gas lid. Any clue how to fix????

From page 339 of the OM:
â–  The message appears on when:
An evaporative system leak is detected. This may be caused by the fuel fill cap being
loose or not being installed.
â–  What to do when the message appears:
1. Stop the engine.
2. Check that the fuel fill cap is fully installed.
If not, loosen the cap, and then retighten it until it clicks at least once.
3. Drive for several days of normal driving.
The message should go off.

â–  When the malfunction indicator lamp comes on
Malfunction indicator lamp comes on if the system continues to detect a leak of
gasoline vapor. If this happens, check the fuel fill cap using the procedures described
above.
