Strange shifting

i notice a strange amount of jolting or other odd shifting occurences while driving (automatic tranny) 2012 EX civvvv. i am aware of the 1-2 common shift problem but i also noticed today tht my car strted to "bump" as it down shifted id say from 2nd to about 1st gear and it kinda made me concerned. Mind you tht my car is about 2 weeks old...Any suggestions?

Can I Drive in D2 gear?

Whoops, the Title should read D3 gear.
So, I bought an LX Sedan and had to get the automatic because my wife sometimes drives it.
Today I put it it in the D3 gear and noticed the car had much more spark to it, especially from a stop. I watched the tachometer closely to make sure the revs didn't get too high, but to my surprise they remained quite low (3500 - 4000) even when I was getting up to 100 km/hr (about 50 mph) at that point I shifted back into D. I know I will burn more gas doing this, but, at the moment, it's so much fun.

Can anyone explain to me if it is okay for me to boot around in D3 all the time (until I get to highway speeds of course)? Are there any dangers of doing this? What exactly are the D3 , 2 and 1 gears for other than going up very steep hills?

Appreciate your feedback. Cheers!

I've heard a lot of people recommend using D3 for driving in town because it's harder on the transmission when it uses the overdrive at too low a speed. I quit using D3 coz when I leave town I always forget to put it back in overdrive :)

What D3 does is act exactly like a normal automatic, but, as if it had only 3 gears. So it shifts up from 1 and 2, and the ceiling is at the end of the rev range for 3rd gear.

I don't see it as a problem at all, just be aware of its limits. Obviously don't try to go too fast and have the revs staying up so high for the entire trip.

EDIT:

Also, 1+2 can be used for towing, towing up hills, going down steep hills, snow/mud

D3 makes it so that the transmission is capable of only 3 options and thus doesn't have to search as hard for what gear to be in. Useful in city/stop/go

Hey, thanks for the info man. Very clear and well explained.

its normal on the autos

i have the same problem on my EX coupe. I've found it jumps when you switch from reverse to drive, letting it roll a bit, and when accelerating from stops. Just being light on the throttle has helped me the most (even though i dont like it haha)

I wouldn't describe it as a jerk but rather a moderately hard shift. I found that if you baby the pedal when coming to a stop but not completely stop, it eliminates this problem. But if you come to a near-stop and then gun it then obviously you will feel a slight hard shift.

I only notice it when my ECON is off. . i just leave ECON turned on unless im in situations where I need peppier acceleration.. in ECON mode the car will stay in second gear instead of downshift to first and then quickly upshuft back to second which causes the abrupt feeling...

Correct usage of D3

Hi everyone,

I'm driving a crimson red automatic and was wondering:
What exactly is the correct situation to shift into D3 (or any other mode past D)? I'm not very knowledgeable about how transmissions work and was thoroughly confused by Google results. I usually drive in the D mode, but recently tried shifting into D3 while still in motion. I've noticed that it gives me more power in acceleration for passing. Is this what D3 is used for?

Any comments much appreciated!

I've read the short descriptions in the manual, but also read a lot of conflicting information online about it being only used when towing/special conditions. Just wanted to get a straight answer.

Don't have an auto but doesn't it lock you into that gear or make it so it's the highest gear you can go. I know some people use lower gears for braking when coming down a steep incline.

you only have 3 gears in D3. say you're about to go up a huge hill. slap it in d3 and you'll have more power to make it up the hill compared to being in 4th or 5th at lower RPMs. also in the city it isnt bad your car doesnt shift as much. its not all that important
