Does your 2012 Civic Si Burn Oil?

pull ur airbox lid off and its wide open you can see the block, they told me they dont no where that oil came from.....they said pull the dipstick ur oil isnt that dirty it came from somewhere else

I showed somebody that picture of your piston, first thing he said was it looks like a leaking head gasket, he even thought he noticed a spot on the piston where a piece of the gasket was rubbing on it.
Makes me wonder if these problems are not the pistons/rings, but something with the head/gasket/block.

So i just checked mine after reading through these posts. Mine is in the middle of the 2 dots at 2500 miles. Going in for its first oil change this weekend hopefully it doesn't drop anymore I'll ask them about it when i go in?

You should be good, I was 3/4 of a quart low at 1900 miles, topped it off and it stopped consuming oil around 2600 miles.

We have 3 categories of usage:

a)None
b)A quart or so before the first oil change, then no significant usage
c) major usage, a quart every 500-600 miles

Ya that's true I'll see what's up then

After doing a few oil consumption test, my dealership got approved to do new piston, new rings, and a few other parts. I've had the car back for less than a full day, but so far it drives well. No major issues so far. Can't wait to get a few hundred miles on it to check the oil though. Here's a couple pics of what was replaced for any one curious.

Ignore the top half, that was for my vent window that was poping out.

Actually a little off topic, what happened to your window? The little quarter window in my left rear window of my Si had to have the seal replaced, looks like it got rolled over in the manufacturing process, not a big deal just curious if yours was much the same?

All of you DO realize that the K24 engine in the Si is exactly the same engine - and transmission (with manual) - that's in the Acura TSX, don't you?? Look up "TSX K24 Engine problems" on Google - you won't find much if anything. So - why do you suppose the very same engine in the Si has problems that don't seem apparent in the TSX?? I have some ideas.........

And don't try to tell me it's a different engine - same 2.4L 201HP 170lb/ft Torque - chain driven DOH Cams...........

There are not the exact same engine:
The Civic uses the K24Z7, 201 Hp and 170lb/torq
The TSX uses the K24Z3, 201 Hp and 172 lb/torq

I read the block is different on our Si than the TSX, and I think the heads are different, but internals the same.

Joe - Same Compression Ratio - 2 lb/ft more torque maybe due to dual exhausts - I seriously doubt that the Head is different OR internals - or block. The different "last number designation" may even be due to the car it's installed in. My point is that there does NOT seem to be the same Oil Consumption issue..........anyone who says that V-Tech'ing the engine in the Si right out of the box and beating the crap out of it is "best" for ANY engine is out of their minds. At the same time any mass produced engine can end up with some "less than acceptable" units. Case in point - I have 3500 on mine now - NEVER revved it past 4000 first 600 miles - never past 5000 for next 1500 - changed oil/filter at 2100 - NEVER has burned even an 8th qt of oil both Break-in or now Royal Purple,,,,the ones who say they "beat it" out of the box and it runs "fine" - maybe ....but I doubt it. How bout the ILX?? Have not heard of any issues with that engine either and that IS the Z7 designation. Have not heard about Rev Hang on it either.

I think we've pretty much determined break in and driving style has nothing to do with the oil consumption problems. There was a member here that said the block had to be re-designed to fit the car, so it's not the TSX engine dropped in an Si. Problems can happen, just google Civic bad block, or 8th gen Si bad 3rd gear synchro .

It seems at this point even Honda doesn't know what's the problem, that picture of the piston that somebody posted looked more like a leaking head gasket than rings according to an ASE master mechanic that I showed it to.
There have been issues with the K motors using oil, look at the 2008-2010 accord 2008 Honda Accord Excessive Oil Consumption | CarComplaints.com

3000 miles, i have added 3 quarts. :/

And the engine in the ILX ???

Been watching my oil level like a hawk since I bought my car about 5 weeks ago... I have 3600 miles on it and it hasn't used a drop of oil as far as I can tell. Car build date is 5/2012. Just wanted to throw in my experience...

K24Z3 and K24Z7 are not the same engines ..very similar, same engine series, but there you go, if every single engine components were the exact same, it would be the same engine codes

have any of you tried switching to fully-synthetic oil? see if it helps

so then what about the "coder" for the Acura ILX???

Larry, it probably is a Z7 since it's acknowledged to be a direct transplant from the Si. Why do we not hear about oil consumption? They've only been out for a short period time compared to the Si. Does it have rev hang? Does it consume oil? Dunno.

Did you drive and now own an ILX to definitively say that is has zero problems that the Si has. I agree that we shouldn't sit idle on these problems but to say there is some conspiracy between the Si and ILX is silly. C'mon.

^ I'm gonna go to Acura after work and see i they have a 2.4 on the lot and get the engine code. All the reports say it's carryover from Si but the Acura website says TSX. What better way than to go look?

Conspiracy?? ....never even suggested that.....what I'm saying is that - and I know the ILX is not that exposed yet - but have not heard/read of any Rev Hang with it and all the Car Mag Tests of the Civic constantly make note of it. Oil consumption? Again not much exposure yet on the ILX but not any mention of it. I've read that the ILX Z24 engine has "balance shafts" but never read that about the 7 Series engine in the Si? What I DID read is that the ILX 2.4/6-spd does NOT have the Si Helical LS Differential that the Si comes standard with so that's a big negative to me......
